3 Steps to Start Journaling the Bible

Excited to get started with Bible study and journaling, but not sure where to start? You’re in the right place! Embarking on this journey opens up a world of creativity and a deeper connection with Scripture.

The first step is choosing a Journaling Bible that fits your personal style and needs – think wide margins for notes and art, and quality paper for all your creative expressions. With your perfect Bible in hand, gather some pens and maybe a splash of color with pencils or paints. Finally, set aside time for this creative spiritual practice.

Let’s dive in and discover how journaling the Bible can transform your faith journey, one beautiful page at a time!

Step One: Choosing Your Journaling Bible

Selecting the right journaling Bible depends on your individual needs and preferences for Bible study and creative expression. It needs to be something you’re comfortable with, that inspires you, and that can hold all the insights, prayers, and reflections you’ll gather along the way.

That said, there are some features and important considerations to keep in mind. Based on my experience, here are the top things to look for:

Top 10 Things to Look for in a Journaling Bible

1. Wide Margins

Look for a Bible with wide margins. These provide ample space for notes, prayers, reflections, and art. Wide margins are essential for those who wish to express their creativity alongside the scripture text. Two-inch margins are a common size in today’s journaling Bibles.

2. Quality Paper

Opt for a journaling Bible with thick, high-quality paper if you can. This is particularly important if you plan to use watercolors or paint. Thick paper reduces bleed-through and can handle a variety of mediums, allowing you to journal without damaging the pages.

Lots of journaling Bibles have standard thin pages, but I’ve found that it’s still workable if you choose the right journaling tools. For example, I have the She Reads Truth Bible and it has thinner pages. I stick to Mr.Pen highlighters and pens, stickers, washi, and Crayola Super Tips markers.

Paper color is another thing to consider. Some journaling Bibles have white pages, whereas others have cream-colored pages. I prefer white so that my colors stay the same and aren’t altered by the cream-colored paper.

3. Single-Column Text

Single Column Journaling Bible - Bible GirlA single-column text layout is often preferred for journaling Bibles because it provides a more open, readable format. This layout can make it easier to read the scriptures and add your notes or art next to the relevant verses.

Interleaved journaling Bibles have a blank sheet of paper between every page of scripture. I prefer to journal directly next to the scripture passages so I use a single-column layout with space in the margins instead. If I need a blank page in between I can always add one (called a tip-in)!

4. Durable Binding

A durable binding is crucial for a journaling Bible that will be used frequently and perhaps carried with you. Not only that, it might get a little thick after you add all your artsy decor inside of it! Look for a sturdy binding that allows the Bible to lay flat when open, making it easier to write and draw in.

5. Pre-printed or Blank Designs

Some journaling Bibles come with pre-printed illustrations or designs that you can color or embellish, which can be particularly appealing if you’re looking for inspiration or a starting point to meditate on. Others offer completely blank margins for full creative freedom.

6. Version and Translation

Consider the version and translation of the Bible that resonates most with you. Whether you prefer NIV, ESV, KJV, or another translation, ensure the journaling Bible you choose is in a version that you find comfortable and meaningful for study and reflection.

7. Extras and Features

Look for additional features that enhance your study and journaling experience, such as a ribbon marker, elastic band closure, index tabs, or included stickers and stencils. Some journaling Bibles also come with extra pages for notes, devotionals, or reading plans. Some even include icons on each page that you can scan to learn more in the Filament app.

8. Size and Portability

Consider the size and weight of the Bible. If you plan to take your journaling Bible with you to church, Bible study, or while traveling, you might prefer a more compact and lightweight version.

9. Cover Material

Choose a cover material that suits your needs in terms of durability and aesthetics. Leather or faux leather covers are durable and elegant, while cloth or paperback covers might be lighter and more affordable.

10. Personalization Options

Some journaling Bibles offer personalization options, such as embossing your name on the cover. This can make your Bible even more special and personal, or make a great gift.

Step 3: Creating a Journaling Habit

Incorporating Bible journaling into your daily routine can deepen your connection with Scripture and enhance your spiritual growth. Here are some strategies to help you make Bible journaling a regular part of your life:

Set Aside Dedicated Time

  • Schedule It: Just like any important appointment, schedule a specific time each day or week for Bible journaling. A lot of people like to do their Bible study first thing in the morning. Spending time with Jesus right away sets the tone for the day. But, whether it’s first thing in the morning, during lunch, or before bed, find a time that works for you and stick to it. I find the more time I spend with the Lord, the more I crave it.
  • Start Small: Even just 10 to 15 minutes can make a big difference. You can gradually increase the time as you settle into your routine.

  • Find Your Space: Designate a quiet, comfortable spot for your journaling. Having a specific place can help signal to your brain that it’s time to focus and be creative.
  • Gather Your Supplies: Keep your journaling supplies organized and within easy reach. This reduces barriers to getting started and helps keep the focus on your journaling. I recently got a nice organizer that sits on my desk for all my main supplies. Now I don’t have to take them all out and put them all away for each Bible study session!

Set Goals and Themes

  • Reflect on Your Goals: What do you hope to achieve with your Bible journaling? Deeper understanding of Scripture, expressing creativity, recording prayers and insights? Setting clear goals can guide your journaling practice.
  • Choose Themes or Books of the Bible: Focusing on specific themes or books of the Bible can provide direction and inspiration for your journaling. This approach can also make your study more structured and comprehensive.
  • Work Through a Pre-Made Bible Study: I really enjoy working through guided Bible studies that include a video portion and a study guide portion, maybe you would too? I’m currently doing The Armor of God and just finished The Deborah Anointing. Once I finish one Bible study, I start another right away.

Incorporate It into Your Devotional Practice

  • Combine with Daily Readings: Integrate journaling into your existing devotional practice. Reflect on the day’s Scripture reading through art, notes, or reflections in your journal.
  • Pray Before You Start: Begin each journaling session with prayer, asking God to guide your thoughts and creativity.

Share and Reflect

  • Join a Community: Sharing your journaling with a community can provide encouragement, inspiration, and accountability. Look for online groups or local meetups dedicated to Bible journaling.
  • Review Regularly: Spend time reflecting on your past journaling entries. This can offer insights into your spiritual growth, answered prayers, and how God’s Word has impacted your life over time.

Creating a Bible journaling habit takes time and commitment, but the spiritual and creative rewards are immeasurable. As you make this practice a regular part of your life, you’ll find that it not only enriches your understanding of Scripture but also provides a valuable outlet for expressing your faith.
